UNDERGROUND CLIMATE CHANGE

Threat and Opportunity Below Cities

Underground Climate Change: Threat and Opportunity Below Cities is an exploration of one of the most overlooked consequences of urbanization: the progressive and persistent warming of the subsurface beneath cities. Drawing on years of field observations, laboratory investigations, and large-scale numerical simulations conducted across emblematic urban centers, the book offers an accessible yet scientifically rigorous journey into how anthropogenic heat released from building basements, underground parking garages, tunnels, and other subterranean transportation systems, buried utilities, and heated ground surfaces accumulates beneath cities. In doing so, it reveals the profound implications of underground warming for infrastructure performance, public comfort, environmental health, and the energy dynamics of cities.

FOREWORD

Hc Svnt Dracones
"What Alessandro Rotta Loria has done, with the patience of an engineer and the eye of a historian, is mount the survey expedition. He has lowered instruments into the ground in Lausanne, Chicago, Boston, and Venice, and kept them there long enough for the subsurface to record its own condition across years and across cities. The older imaginations he writes about so well, Dante's among them, filled that depth with fire and judgment."

Reviews and Awards

"This book addresses one of the most urgent dimensions of the urban underground: its hidden warming. Through a fascinating exploration enriched by a scientific depth rarely found in a work so accessible, Alessandro Rotta Loria shows that underground urban heat is not simply a problem to be managed but a resource to be harnessed. There is something here for everyone, from the general public to peers in our own field. An important book for our time."
Professor Lyesse Laloui

"This is the first definitive treatise on a silent, subterranean crisis: an urban 'underground inferno' where temperatures are rising at double the rate of the surface. With a rare combination of rigorous scientific data and captivating, narrative storytelling, Rotta Loria masterfully bridges the gap between ancient history and engineering, mapping out a visionary framework to capture this wasted heat, turning a hidden hazard into a cornerstone of clean, renewable energy for the future. Underground Climate Change is a masterclass in uncovering the unseen. While the world has spent decades looking up to understand climate change, Rotta Loria brilliantly compels us to look down. This is a monumental, eye-opening work."

"Much of what will shape our future lies out of sight. Rotta Loria challenges our surface-bound perspective, revealing a hidden urban layer where history accumulates and future trajectories take form. With precision and imagination, he brings into focus forces that are pervasive yet unseen. A lucid, conceptually original work that compels us to look beneath the surface, and think ahead."

"Since time immemorial, humanity has delved into the earth-whether to secure the salvation of its soul or the preservation of its body. Alessandro F. Rotta Loria leads us into the worlds beneath our feet, both ancient and utopian. He makes us feel their perils, while revealing the extraordinary promise of the subterranean realm. This unveiling of the unseen is only the beginning of a new era-one in which the superstructures of our cities, known as architecture, will merge with the infrastructures we call networks."

"This book offers an intriguing account of how urban underground heating affects infrastructure, public health, and ecosystems. It is a richly informative and impressive read, grounded in real field observations. Using some fundamental thermo-hydro-mechanical principles of soils, it points toward some engineering solutions and innovations for more sustainable and resilient cities. A compelling and timely read."
